This week, the Freeport of Riga Authority will start repair works on the Daugavgrīva shore reinforcement section, restoring the next of the historic sections of the more than 500-metre-long BKRR dam. Every year, rising water levels result in the loss of several metres of shoreline land, so it is essential to continue reinforcing the shoreline. As part of the renovation work, the dam's reinforced concrete slabs will be dismantled over a length of 80 meters, and a new shore reinforcement superstructure which will be filled with boulders quarried in Latvia, will be created. Currently, this section is in a critical state, with part of the dam's structural base washed away due to last year's storms and sea level rise, with the concrete paving slabs damaged and broken in many places.

The BKRR dam was built in 1997 as a bank reinforcement structure. Its purpose is to protect the land and harbour area from coastal erosion and possible flooding. At the same time, it is a popular walking area for residents to get to the nearby Rietumu Mols, which will once again be safe and accessible for recreation and leisure as soon as the works are completed.

The first reconstruction works on the BKKR dam structure, following damage caused by autumn storms and sea level changes, were carried out by the Freeport of Riga Authority in 2020, restoring almost 200 metres of the reinforcement line. In 2022, another 100 metres of the dam structure were reinforced with boulders and granite piles. This summer, work will continue with the restoration of a further 80 metres of the historic dam structure.

The restoration of the Daugavgrīva shoreline will be carried out by SIA “ASFALTBŪVE”, which was selected in the framework of an open procurement procedure. According to the contract, the repair works will take three months.

!!! For the public safety, movement along the hydro-technical structure will be prohibited for the duration of the repair works. The Freeport of Riga Authority apologises for any inconvenience caused!
