Today, Andris Ameriks, Chairperson of the Board of the Freeport of Riga, and Ansis Zeltiņš, CEO of the Freeport of Riga Authority, visited Riga Bulk Terminal Ltd. in Kundziņsala to meet with its management and become acquainted with the progress on construction of the second stage of the terminal. The company has made significant investments in the creation of a multi-functional and technologically intensive bulk cargo handling terminal, which is currently considered to be the most modern terminal in the Baltic States.
The terminal is unique due to its engineering solutions used in the construction of bulk cargo terminals for the first time in both Latvia and Europe. Innovative technological solutions allow simultaneously performing processing and handling of several types of bulk cargo, as well as performing different bulk cargo handling operations using the same equipment. In term of its capacity, Riga Bulk Terminal has the potential to become one of the largest grain stevedores in the region.
Construction of the terminal was launched in July 2012. In early 2014, the 1st stage of the bulk cargo handling terminal was commissioned for use, which included the construction of a pier suitable for Panamax-type ships, as well as the creation of a bulk cargo handling system. In 2014 the construction of the 2nd stage of the terminal commenced, envisaging the construction of two automated bulk cargo warehouses with total storage volume of up to 60 thousand tons, as well as construction of a modern ship loading system, which allowed connecting and automatically switching handling from warehouses, railway cars and road transport.
Currently, the first part of second stage of construction of the terminal has ended: one automated warehouse with capacity of up to 35 thousand tons has been constructed. In the next stage the new ship loading system, suitable for handling Panamax-type ships, will be introduced and another automated warehouse with the capacity of up to 25 thousand tons will be constructed.
