The Freeport of Riga Authority (FPRA) has become a member of the Latvian - Belarusian Economic Relations Promotion Association (LBESVB). Belarus has always been an important partner, of the port of Riga, but now, in connection with the reorientation of Russian cargo to Russian ports, active search of new possibilities of cooperation with Belarus has become particularly important. The Freeport of Riga Authority considers its membership in LBESVB as one of the platforms providing an opportunity to continuously and actively demonstrate the Riga port advantages to Belarus partners, as well as promote a favorable investment climate and the port infrastructure facilities for Belarus cargo transit.
The Freeport of Riga Authority and the Riga port share the LBESVB objective – to promote economic cooperation between the countries. In particular, it relates to one of the Associations goals - to create and provide the necessary conditions for establishment and operation of the transit corridor Asia - Europe. Participating in the Association activities the FPRA will explore new opportunities to achieve this objective together with other members of the LBESVB. Cooperation with Belarus is also topical in the framework of Belarus - China's common logistics project “The Great Stone”. In order to achieve the objectives of China's entrepreneurs, in the context of logistics park development in Belarus, it is necessary to seek more favourable routes for transportation of goods from Minsk to seaports of Lithuania and Latvia.
Latvian and Belarus Economic Relations Promotion Association was founded in autumn 2005 by legal and natural persons who want to promote the two countries' economic cooperation. The Association is governed by the Statutes, the main governing body is the Board consisting of five elected members and the Executive Director. The main objective of the Association is to promote development of Latvian and Belarusian economic relations. Due to the fact that the Freeport of Riga Authority is a body that represents the interests of the port companies, it is very important that the Association is not engaged in politics, but provides support to those who promote and develop the mutual business in Latvia or Belarus.
