Today the Riga City Council's City Development Committee Members and the Riga city Chief architect Mr.Gvido Princis visited and assessed the infrastructure of the project “The Krievu Sala Infrastructure Development for Relocation of the Port Operation from the City Center”, implemented by the Freeport of Riga. The new Krievu Sala terminal infrastructure project together with the relevant SJSC “Latvijas Dzelzceļš"(Latvian Railway) railway infrastructure project this year has been nominated as one of 11 nominees for the Riga Architecture Award 2016.
“We are very pleased that the Riga City Chief Architect's Office and the jury have highly evaluated the Krievu Sala project implemented by the Freeport and included it into the list of finalists, competing for the Riga Architecture Award 2016. This shows that we are moving in the right direction. This is the most ambitious project of the Freeport, which has been implemented with the support of the EU Cohesion Fund – now the Freeport boasts the world-standard port infrastructure with four deep-water berths, all the necessary access roads and engineering communications. Today we had a great opportunity to show all of it to the Riga City Council's City Development Committee Members. This is a project that during the next fifty years will make a considerable contribution not only to our city, but also to the whole country's economy,” said the Freeport of Riga CEO Mr.Leonids Loginovs.
The aim of the project “The Krievu Sala Infrastructure Development for Relocation of the Port Operation from the City Center” is to free the historical center of Riga from polluting cargo handling operations, transferring the port terminals to a more appropriate place - Krievu Island (Krievu Sala), while ensuring the competitiveness of the Riga port in the Baltic Sea region. The project has been implemented within the period from 2010 to the end of 2015, when the project infrastructure was put into operation. Four deep-water berths with a total length of 1,180 m and a 249 meters long connecting berth were built in the framework of the project. Depth at berth - 15.5 m, with the possibility to extend to 17 m. The project works included the River Daugava bank reinforcement as well as construction of all necessary access roads, railway junctions and appropriate infrastructure. The planned terminal capacity - from 15 to 20 million tons per year. The total project costs are 151.8 million EUR. By thoughtfully implementing project activities, it was possible to achieve 10 million EUR savings.
