On May 9, the Minister-President of Flanders Mr.Geert Bourgeois paid visit to the Freeport of Riga, accompanied by Antwerp, Ghent and Zeebrugge port representatives. During the visit, the Minister-President repeatedly stressed the diverse possibilities for cooperation, highlighting the role of the port of Riga in the logistics processes of the Baltic Sea eastern coast, and comparing its importance for the Baltics to the Flemish ports’ impact on the relevant region's economy.
During his visit, Mr. Bourgeois met with the Freeport of Riga CEO Mr. Leonids Loginovs and his Deputy, Marketing Director Mr. Edgars Suna. Guests were introduced to the Freeport of Riga operation by visiting the Vessel Traffic Service Centre and exploring the port water area by boat. Members of the delegation welcomed the rapid development of the Freeport – they were impressed by the new terminals and infrastructure development on Krievu Island.
During the visit to the VTCS the delegation met the Harbour Master Mr. Arturs Brokovskis-Vaivods and had an opportunity to learn about the Harbour Master’s Service operation. The Minister-President of Flanders and port representatives positively evaluated the security measures at the port of Riga, which have been implemented and maintained on the basis of sophisticated navigation, communication and security technologies as well as work of professional and responsible port personnel.
