Regardless of the thick ice created by the lasting frost in River Daugava and Gulf of Riga work of the Freeport of Riga is smooth. Data of the Freeport of Riga Authority show that 52 ships have been serviced between February 17 8:00 AM and February 22 8:00 AM. Among them 18 ships have entered, 26 ships have left, and 8 have been shifted. There have been no delays in service of Tallink ferries – they arrive and leave according to the schedule.

On average, ten vessels are serviced per day, which is a very good showing even for weather conditions when the ships are not hindered by ice. According to data gathered by the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute, ice in Gulf of Riga is approximately 10-15 cm thick, in some places 25-35 cm thick.

The Freeport of Riga Authority has the icebreaker Varma in its disposition, which mainly works from the sea gate to the reception buoy; in the remaining port territory way for ships is freed by tugboats. Current weather attests the capacity of the Fleet of Freeport of Riga Ltd to work in complicated conditions.

Bringing in and out of ships, as well as shifting of the big vessels takes more time, but the situation is stable. Technical parameters of Santa and Stella, which correspond to the criteria of ice class tugboats, have justified themselves.
