November has been the most active months this year at the Freeport of Riga – 2.78 million tons of cargos have been transshipped. Such turnover of one month substantially influences the total results of 11 months of 2010 – since the beginning of the year 27.81 million tons of various cargos have been handled in the Freeport of Riga. As compared with the results achieved last year (in 11 months of 2009 – 27.24 million tons), it is by 2.1% more.

If at the beginning of this year the most optimistic prognosis were connected with achieving the results of 2009, then currently the prognosis are completely different – by the end of the year the previous total annual turnover, which was the biggest in the history of existence of the Freeport of Riga (29.7 million tons), will be surpassed. The tendency for the cargo turnover to increase rapidly is indicative of that – in the last eight month not only have the achieved results been evened up, but even surpassed. We remind that in March cargo turnover was by 15% smaller than in the first three months of 2009.

The biggest growth was experienced in the segment of general cargos – by 49.9% more was transshipped as compared with the accordant period last year. This year, 2.7 million tons of timber were loaded in the berths of the Freeport of Riga, which is by 66.7% more. The amount of container cargos has also increased substantially – it is by 45.6% bigger than before, and in total this year makes almost 2.44 million tons. Food product cargos become more and more significant in the Riga Port, the amount of fish and fish products also continues to increase.

Total amount of bulk cargos has decreased by 7.6%. Changes have affected transport of artificial fertilizers (-31.5%) and black coal (-17.2%) the most. Increase of the transshipped amount of iron ore is assessed as a positive tendency – in the first 11 months of this year, as compared with the last year, it has increased four times. The amount of transported sawn timber has also doubled.

Regardless the fact that the number of passengers of cruise ships is smaller this year than the last year, the total number of people attended at the Riga Port has increased by 9.5% and exceeds the border of 700 thousands.
