Riga – 2 July, 2009. The extraordinary meeting of the Board of the Freeport of Riga was held, during which the new Chairman of Board and the new deputy of Chairman of Board were appointed.


Mr. Viesturs Silenieks was nominated as the first candidate for the position of the Board Chairman. He received votes from Mr. Olafs Pulks, Mr. Edmunds Krastiņš and Mr. Jānis Straume, while the rest five members of the Board abstained.

The second candidate Mr. Ainārs Šlesers was nominated for the position of the Chairman. Six members of the Board voted for Mr. A.Šlesers, while Mr. O.Pulks and Mr. E.Krastiņs voted against him.

Mr. V.Silenieks was elected as the deputy of the Board Chairman of the Freeport of Riga.

Mr. A.Šlesers expressed gratitude to the previous Board Chairman Mr. Andris Ārgalis and acknowledged his contribution to the development of the port and increase of the cargo turnover from 12 to nearly 30 million tons during the period 1999 – 2008.

The new Chairman put forward pro-active actions on attracting new cargo to the port of Riga and fierce competition with other ports as two of the main priorities for the future.

Mr. A.Šlesers regards competition to be the base of successful development and improvement of the economic situation.
