Within the framework of the project, the Freeport of Riga Authority will carry out reconstruction of the railway level crossing on Uriekstes Street at the port gate, reconstruction of the car and railway bridge in the southern part of Kundziņsala, reconstruction of the motorway in Kundziņsala from the bridge to the container terminal - SIA “Baltic Container Terminal” (BCT), as well as the construction of a new connecting road from the container terminal to the transport parking lot. Furthermore, the BCT in cooperation with the Freeport of Riga Authority will ensure the extension of the berth line at the container terminal by building an additional section and dredging the water area, with an aim to simultaneously receive and service several vessels with a larger carrying capacity. The project outcomes will strengthen the commercial competitiveness of the Port of Riga, at the same time improving the military mobility and national defence capacity of Latvia and its allies.

The project is implemented with co-financing from the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Agency (CINEA) within the framework of the military mobility program. The tripartite agreement between the Freeport of Riga Authority, CINEA and SIA Baltic Container Terminal (BCT) was signed in May 2023. The total amount of investment of the project is 12.51 million euros, where the co-financing granted by CINEA is 50% of the eligible project costs, which will be received by each project partner according to the distribution of construction phases. All activities within the framework of the project are to be fully completed by the end of 2024.

The Freeport of Riga Authority has completed the reconstruction of the car and railway bridge in the southern part of Kundziņsala in July 2023.

The bridge over Sarkandaugava from Uriekstes Street to Kundziņsala was built in the period from 1979 to 1981 and is the only railway bridge that ensures the railway freight traffic to/from the territory of Kundziņsala. Currently, until the construction of the new traffic overpass from Tvaika Street to Kundziņsala, this is also the only connecting link for heavy road vehicles and military transport traffic to/from Kundziņsala freight terminals. During the reconstruction of the bridge, a part of its load-bearing structures has been renovated, providing for a safe and convenient crossing of the bridge for both road and rail transport, as well as for pedestrians. Decorative lighting has been installed to make the metal structures of the bridge visible during the dark hours of the day.
