Militārā mobilitāte

The Freeport of Riga Authority has completed the reconstruction of the car and railway bridge in the southern part of Kundziņsala. Thus, the first stage in the implementation of an ambitious project has been completed, providing for strengthening the commercial competitiveness of the Port of Riga, and improving the military mobility of Latvia and its allies. Withe aim to implement this project, in the spring of this year a tripartite agreement was concluded between the Freeport of Riga Authority, the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Agency (CINEA) and SIA “Baltic Container Terminal” (BCT) on increasing the dual-use capacity of the Port of Riga by improving the port infrastructure in Kundziņsala. Currently, the work on the implementation of the project in Kundziņsala is in progress.

The bridge over Sarkandaugava from Uriekstes Street to Kundziņsala was built in the period from 1979 to 1981 and is the only railway bridge that ensures the railway freight traffic to/from the territory of Kundziņsala. Currently, until the construction of the new traffic overpass from Tvaika Street to Kundziņsala, this is also the only connecting link for heavy road vehicles and military transport traffic to/from Kundziņsala freight terminals. During the reconstruction of the bridge, a part of its load-bearing structures has been renovated, providing for a safe and convenient crossing of the bridge for both road and rail transport, as well as for pedestrians. Decorative lighting has been installed to make the metal structures of the bridge visible during the dark hours of the day.

At the same time, a phase of active construction was started in the project part related to extension of the ship berth line, which is conducted by SIA “Baltic Container Terminal”. The BCT berth KS - 34 is being rebuilt, with the construction of an additional section of the berth and its extension by 57.3 meters. As a result, the length of the BCT berths’ line, combining three berths, will reach a total of 506.3 meters. It will be possible to simultaneously moor and service two large ships - container ships, ro-ro ships (cargo ferries) or military ships at the terminal, as well as moor up to 340 meters long vessels. Thus, the process of loading and unloading cargo at the terminal will be accelerated, boosting the efficiency of the terminal's work and commercial competitiveness. Considering that the terminal accommodates military ships, speeding up vessel servicing will contribute to increasing military mobility and strengthening the common security of our country and NATO.

Currently, construction works are also underway in other port infrastructure projects in Kundziņsala, which are provided for within the framework of the agreement. The Freeport of Riga Authority is carrying out reconstruction of the railway level crossing on Uriekstes Street near the port control gate, reconstruction of the motorway in Kundziņsala from the bridge to the container terminal BCT, as well as construction of a new connecting road from the container terminal to the transport parking lot. All activities within the framework of the project are to be completed in full by the end of 2024.
