Today, on January 9, U.S. Ambassador to Latvia Christopher Robinson and his team arrived at the Port of Riga for an introductory visit. The ambassador visited the Vessel Traffic Service Centre of the Port of Riga, where he met with the management of the Freeport of Riga Authority. During the visit, the port's activities and development scenarios were discussed, considering the current geopolitical challenges in the cargo logistics sector.
Ansis Zeltiņš, the Freeport of Riga CEO, noted that one of the cornerstones of the future development of the Port of Riga would be the successful implementation of smart industrial projects within the port territory, especially those related to the green energy production segment. The progress of the solar park project in Spilve meadows and possible support solutions that should be promoted at the state and municipal level to help the more successful and rapid implementation of similar large-scale green energy projects were discussed.
A. Zeltiņš also informed that in recent years the Port of Riga has accumulated considerable experience and knowledge, stimulating foreign investors' interest in the production of wind turbine components in the port area: “This type of production facility requires a large territory, skilled labour and, above all, access to waterways for transportation. The Port of Riga has all these advantages, which is why we are actively working in this direction”.
During the visit, the prospect of passenger infrastructure development was also discussed - the construction of the new Riga passenger terminal in cooperation with Riga municipality and a private investor. Riga is a popular destination for U.S. cruise tourists. Travelers from the USA are among the most frequent cruise ship passengers, visiting Riga in the framework of the Baltic Sea cruises organized by various cruise ship operators. In 2023, almost a quarter – 22% of all cruise tourists visiting Riga were from the USA.
Taking into account the role of the Port of Riga in enhancing Latvian and NATO military mobility and strengthening the Allies' common security, the discussions also focused on the Embassy's capabilities to provide support in information flow and planning to facilitate even greater involvement of the Port of Riga in military logistics chains.
