Summarizing data about the first four months of 2011, it can be seen that turnover of the port, as compared with accordant period of last year, continues to grow; at the beginning of this year, by 13% more cargos than last year have been transshipped.

In total, almost 10.9 million tons have been transshipped in four months in port terminals; of them, 2.86 million tons in liquid cargo segment, which is by 32.8% more, almost 2 million tons in general cargo segment, which is by 8.3% more, but total amount of bulk cargos reaches 6.04 million tons or by 7% more than last year.

The most positive tendency can be observed in liquid cargo segment, reaching 2.86 million tons in the first four months of the year. It is one of the most notable growths of cargo turnover during the entire operation period of the port.

In general cargo segment, the amount of transshipped container cargos rapidly nears one million. It is by 20.6% more than in 2010. Andris Ameriks, Chairman of the Board of the Freeport of Riga Authority, is satisfied that the amount of container cargos continues to grow rapidly and has a more and more significant role in operation of the Freeport of Riga, reaching 8.5% of the total amount. “Along the growth of this cargo assortment, distribution of risks changes – the more various cargos, the smaller the risk to experience notable decrease of cargo amount. I want to emphasize again – we are only a small part of global and Russian logistics system, but we must attract as many cargos as we can. I would like to note that an agreement has been concluded with Brazilian entrepreneurs on establishment of their logistics centre in the Riga Port, which is a very important project for us.”

The biggest increase in bulk cargo segment was to coal cargos that were very difficult to transship and transport in the cold winter months. Currently, total amount in four months is 4.2 million tons, which is by 7% more than at the beginning of last year. Very little, by almost one percent, transport of artificial fertilizers has decreased, also less sugar, peat, scrap metal, sawn timber and woodchips have been transshipped. At the same time, the amount of transported ore continues to increase, this year it has grown by 73.6%.

Tallink continues to operate very successfully; this year it has serviced 203 thousand passengers, which is by 26% more than previous year. Of them, 8442 are cruise passengers; there were no such passengers in the Riga Port in the accordant period of last year at all.
