Yesterday, October 16, the port of Riga welcomed the first container train along the route “Ürümqi–Altynkol–Riga–Rotterdam”.

The train of 41 freight cars covered the 6,000 km-long path from the border of China and Kazakhstan to Riga in one week.

This route runs from Ürümqi City in China via the Altynkol/Dostyk border point in Kazakhstan and further on via Russia and Latvia to the Port of Riga. The freight will be further delivered by sea from Riga to Rotterdam, Netherlands.

The container train route is organised within the framework of cooperation of railway and logistics companies from China, Kazakhstan, Russia and Latvia, and implemented in cooperation with the company TransContainer.

“The Port of Riga is an organic crossing point of the logistics corridor in the direction from the Far East to Northern Europe and Scandinavia. The well-developed infrastructure of the Port of Riga, technological possibilities in cargo handling and processing, as well as non-freezing navigation routes are the strengths of the Port of Riga, ensuring fast and regular transport of container cargo in both directions throughout the year”, Ansis Zeltiņš, CEO of the Freeport of Riga, emphasised today.
