On 9 December 2010, the Freeport of Riga Authority approved The Management Plan of Waste Produced by Ships in the Freeport of Riga for the following three years. By approving this document, the management plan of waste produced by ships, which has been approved on 18 December 2007, shall be considered invalid.
According to the Law on Ports and Regulation of the Cabinet of Ministers No. 455 Order on Approval of Waste Produced by Ships and Polluted Waters and the Order on Elaboration of Management Plans of Waste Produced by Ships from 8 October 2002, the Freeport of Riga Authority shall be responsible for acceptance and management of waste produced by ships and remainders from cargo in the Freeport of Riga. „The dynamic development of the port and sharp increase in turnover of cargos within recent years has imposed additional liability to collect and manage pollution and waste produced by ships according to EU directives and global environmental protection requirements. Our aim is to ensure that economic activity of the port has minimum effect on environment, including sea and inland waters and coastal areas both in relation to land resources and air quality,” indicates Vice-Chairman of the Freeport of Riga Authority, representative of the Ministry of the Environment Viesturs Silenieks.
The management plan of waste produced by ships shall establish procedure, according to which ships and framework and companies of the Freeport of Riga, involved in the process of management of waste produced by ships, shall perform activities with waste produced by ships. The plan shall be considered document, which defines policy and aims of waste management in the Freeport of Riga, payment system, which has been established to ensure successful function of collection and utilization system for waste produced by ships, as well as organizational structure and obligations and liability of parties involved.Kuģu radīto atkritumu apsaimniekošanas plāns Rīgas brīvostā (2.62 MB)
