Today, the first Steering Committee meeting and a meeting of the partners involved in the project ‘“Digital transformation of port management, improving the processing and analysis of transport and logistics data” will take place at the Freeport of Ventspils Authority.
During the meeting, the partners will discuss the main challenges of the project - how to create an efficient digital platform for all stakeholders involved in port services and how to ensure uniform access for international and domestic clients promoting better understanding of Latvian largest ports’ operation.
Ports are major hubs for multimodal sea, land and rail freight. Every year, Latvian ports and the logistics sector handle approximately 40 million tonnes of various cargo, and cargo transhipment involves not only consignors and consignees, but also carriers, stevedores, port authorities and control services - such as SRS Customs Administration, State Border Guard, Food and Veterinary Service, etc.
In the framework of freight handling and transportation process a huge amount of data and documents is being generated, their circulation being provided in different formats and information systems. Document coordination and approval, as well as collecting and processing of data necessitate a large allocation of time and resources, resulting in a competitive setback for Latvian freight corridors.
The project addressing the digital transformation of Latvian ports logistics corridors aims to create an integrated, shared platform for multimodal freight services for sea and land freight, including data exchange with existing national information systems. The project outcome will facilitate the digitisation of freight documents and data flows, as well as the automation of port and logistics processes.
The project partners are the Freeport of Riga Authority, the Freeport of Ventspils Authority, Liepaja Special Economic Zone Authority, Ministry of Transport, VSIA “Latvijas Jūras administrācija (Latvian Maritime Administration)”, VAS “Latvijas Dzelzceļš (Latvian Railways)”, SIA “LDz Cargo”, SRS Customs Administration and State Border Guard.
Launching of the integrated service platform created in the framework of the project aimed at digital transformation of Latvian ports and logistics corridors will significantly improve the speed of cargo movement, reduce administrative burden and environmental impact, as well as promote the competitiveness of Latvian freight corridors and the digital development of each actor.
The project is co-financed by the Recovery and Resilience Facility of the European Union. It will cost €3.24 million to implement, while its maintenance and future development will be provided by the ports. The project is to be implemented by 31 May 2026.
