The Freeport of Riga continues its successful development even during the times of economic slowdown. Last week the port hosted the ship NYON which carried 70 483 tons of coal, and it is the largest ship which has ever entered the port. Once the coal was transshipped at RCT, the vessel left for Amsterdam.

„This event opens a new page in the history of the Freeport of Riga development. Due to the purposeful work and right strategy, the port has managed to become a player of the top ports league. The first steps have been taken, and this is only the beginning. The future tasks remain unchanged – within the next years the yearly amount of cargoes handled within port has to reach 50 MLN tons,” stresses the Board Chairman of the Freeport of Riga and Riga Vice-Mayor Ainars Slesers.

The NYON could enter the port of Riga thanks to the Board decision to make investments into the construction of Žurku Island’s berth and the main shipping fairway’ dredging. As a result this allows the Freeport of Riga to serve Panamax type ships with maximum draft of 14 meters.

„Despite the current economic situation, the port is developing. The amount of cargoes handled increases. Ability to host NYON at the Freeport of Riga positions it as one of the most important players within the whole Baltic Sea region,” stresses the CEO of the Freeport of Riga Leonids Loginovs.

Last year the Freeport of Riga handled 29.72 MLN of tons which is by 0.5% more than during 2008.
