Yesterday, on November 8, at the annual meeting of the General Assembly of the European Sea Ports Organization (ESPO), the Freeport of Riga CEO Ansis Zeltiņš was elected the Vice-Chairman of ESPO. A. Zeltiņš will hold this position in ESPO for two years - from 2023 to 2025.
ESPO, founded in 1993, represents European seaports in the European Union, advocating for the interests of its members in European institutions, as well as promoting the vision and values of European ports among European policymakers. During its operation, ESPO has become a unique platform for European ports promoting exchange of ideas and best practice and fostering a sustainable dialogue with all actors of the European port and maritime industry.
The Freeport of Riga Authority has been active in ESPO since 1998, when the Riga port had been the first Latvian port to become an associate member of the ESPO. Since 2004 and Latvia's accession to the European Union, the Freeport of Riga Authority has been a full member of ESPO.
Ansis Zeltiņš: “I am honoured to be entrusted with this high position. I would like to express my gratitude to my colleagues from other European ports for their trust and evaluation of my professional activity. I believe that the role of ESPO will significantly increase in the coming years due to the fact that during the current period of geopolitical and economic challenges, the ports are facing very rapid changes. At the moment, the dialogue between European ports, implemented by ESPO, is particularly important for rapid development of unified proposals for European organizations. In addition, ESPO's role as an advocate for the interests of European ports is increasing in such moments of crisis.”
The General Assembly also elected Zeno D'Agostino - President of the Port Network Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea (Italy) as the ESPO Chairman and re-elected Daan Schalck – the CEO of North Sea Port (Netherlands, Belgium) as the second Vice-Chairman for another term.
