On January 19, 2010 a delegation from the Senate of Canada , headed by the Speaker Mr. Noel Kinsella and accompanied by H.E. Mr. Scott Heatherington, the Ambassador of Canada in the Republic of Latvia, visited the Freeport of Riga.

At the official meeting hosted by Mr. Leonids Loginovs, the CEO of the Freeport of Riga Authority, general issues related to the transport sector operation in Latvia and the Freeport of Riga in particular, as well as challenges of its perspective development, have been discussed with the aim to seek areas of mutual interest and establish a platform for future co-operation.

The Canadian side expressed concern that nowadays the nation’s ports and inland transport infrastructures are somehow overlooked by international cargo shippers on all the main North America–Europe trade routes. Due to the massive volume of traffic and increasing security requirements that eventually influence cargo handling efficiency at the US ports, their Canadian counterparts can offer competitive services for trans-Atlantic trade.

Both sides expressed interest in strengthening of trade ties between Canada and Latvia and conceded that bilateral sister-port agreements between ports of Montreal, Quebec, Halifax and Riga could be signed.
