During the first eight months of the current year 19.41 MLN tons of cargoes were handled at the Freeport of Riga, which is by 12.5% more that during respective period of the last year.


The largest raise of the turnover was in bulk cargo segment, where the amounts handled have increased by 27.1%, reaching 12.69 MLN tons.

Coal was the most handled bulk cargo at the Freeport of Riga – 8.8 MLN tons or by 33.6% more than last year. This year 1.3 MLN tons of chemical cargoes, 553 600 tons of woodchips and 510 000 tons of building materials were handled.

The largest cargo increase in bulk segment was for grain and grain products. Altogether three times more this cargo was handled this year, reaching 236 100 tons. The sharpest decrease was for saw timber by 60.7% - until 63 500 tons.

The amount of general cargoes has diminished by 13%, reaching 3.37 MLN tons. Timber cargoes were handled the most in general cargo segment, reaching 1.52 MLN tons, though it is by 27.4% less than last year. By 2.8% - until 135 241 TEU – lessened amount of containerised cargoes handled.

As for the liquid cargoes the amount decreased by 1.4%, reaching 3.36 MLN tons. During eight months 3.31 MLN tons of oil products were handled at the Freeport, which is by 1.8% less than last year.

352 869 passengers were serviced during the first eight months of the current year, of which 81 552 were cruise passengers.

Overall number of the passengers at the Freeport of Riga, comparing to 2007, increased by 6.2%, but the number of cruise passengers lessened by 32.8%.
