During the first month of the current year 2.59 MLN tons of cargoes were handled at the Freeport of Riga, which is by 12.4% more than during January 2008.


The sharpest raise of the turnover was in liquid cargo segment, where the amounts of the cargoes handled have increased by 59.4%, reaching 634 200 tons.

This year 628 600 tons of oil products were handled at the Freeport, which is by 60.4% more than during last January.

The amounts of bulk cargoes handled for their part have risen by 10.9%, reaching 1.68 MLN tons.

Of bulk cargoes coal was handled the most – 1.32 MLN tons or by 22.1% more than during 2008. Also 181 000 tons of chemicals were handled, which is by 2.7% more, 49 000 tons of wood chips, which is by 35.8% less and 19 600 tons of building materials, which is by 44.8% less than last January.

The turnover of general cargoes has diminished by 29.5%, reaching 276 400 tons. In the general cargo segment containerised cargoes were handled the most, reaching 135 100 tons, which is by 11.4% less than during 2008. The number of containers handled has lessened by 9.5% - until 15 060 TEU.

This year also 94 100 tons of timber were handled at the Freeport, which is by 51.1% less than during last year’s January.

During 2009 the Freeport of Riga has serviced also 24 975 passengers. Total number of passengers serviced at the Freeport of Riga has increased by 54.6% if compared to January 2008.
