One of the topical issues of the Freeport of Riga Authority that along with allocation of additional financing was approved also by the board of the Freeport Authority during last week’s board meeting is deepening of the port aquatorium. This year, in total 7 million lats were shifted for this purpose.

Currently port deepening works are being performed in the central part of the city – at Vanšu Bridge. After completion of deepening works cruise ships that up to now were forced to tie up at the container or coal terminals which is not the friendliest environment for tourism will also be able to land here. Viesturs Silenieks, Deputy of Board Chairman of the Freeport of Riga Authority, informs: „Deepening of port is one of the priorities of the Freeport of Riga Authority. The volume of cargos shipment is also directly dependent on the depth of the port because bigger and bigger ships are willing to enter the Riga Port. The authority of the port begun deepening works of the port aquatorium already last year, but the financing allocated this year is bigger than ever.”

Several enterprises of the Freeport of Riga have expressed the wish for the ship passes and berths to be deepened.
