On Tuesday, December 2, the Freeport of Riga Authority chief executives and staff as well as the representatives of the Coast Guard Service visited Tīreļu mežniecība (Tirelu Forestry) with a view to select a festive fir-tree for the scheduled event under the name " Kapteiņa egle (The Master’s Christmas tree)."
Given that there are Masters of the vessels, entering the Freeport of Riga and crew members, which have heard stories about Christmas traditions or, in the best case, read some fairy tales, as well as taking into account the fact, that a large part of Masters and crews when at the port spend their time mostly on board the ship, a Christmas tree will be mounted this year at the Freeport Vessel Traffic Service Center.
The Vessel Traffic Service Center has been chosen for this purpose due to the fact that all Masters of vessels, entering the port, know this building. First of all, vessels’ traffic and entering the port is controlled by the said facility, on the other hand, the Vessel Traffic Service Centre is a 10-storey building, visible far behind the Freeport of Riga borders.
A beautiful fir-tree, that is 25 years old and 11-meters high, was planted for Sloka cellulose factory, which due to ecological and economic reasons terminated its operation in 1994.
The fir-tree was selected and marked by the long time Harbour Master Mr. Eduards Delvers, assisted by the RBP officers and coastguard service representatives. This year, a beautiful tree will become a land mark due to the fact, that it will be the first and, for some of the guests, the only Christmas symbol, that the seamen will see staying at Riga . " Kapteiņa egle (The Master’s Christmas tree) " will be a Christmas greeting for the vessels entering the port, as well as for the guests of our beautiful city.
