The maritime 5G connectivity solution provided by LMT, Latvia's leading mobile communications and technology company, has been nominated for the prestigious International Association of Ports (IAPH) Sustainability Award. The solution has been tested in the water area of the Port of Riga this summer in cooperation with the Freeport of Riga Authority's capital company, port technical services provider SIA “LVR Flote”. It was shortlisted alongside projects from the ports of Montreal (Canada) and Abu Dhabi (UAE), certifying Latvia's international competitiveness in technology innovation.
LMT, in cooperation with “LVR Flote”, has already conducted a maritime 5G demonstration Seamless 5G Connectivity in the Baltic Sea in the Port of Riga this summer. After tests and measurements carried out so far, the first known 5G connectivity solution was provided, using both “LVR Flote” vessels and air and water drones. In the framework of the demonstration, 5G provided real-time high volume data transfer, uninterrupted 5G connectivity at sea, and the relevant communication capacity, enabling 5G connectivity between ports, ships and ship-to-ship communication. The project is now one of three finalists in the prestigious IAPH Sustainability Award in the “Digitalisation” category.
The International Association of Ports (IAPH) Sustainability Awards celebrate outstanding port sustainability projects from around the world, which are submitted to the World Port Sustainability Programme Database. A total of 71 projects have been submitted for this year's award and 18 finalists continue to compete in six categories: “Digitalisation”, “Infrastructure”, “Health Safety and Security”, “Environmental Care”, “Community Building” and “Climate and Energy”.
“The sea is a challenging environment for high quality and fast communications. All the work LMT has done so far in testing and trialling maritime 5G technologies resulted in a solution that is as yet unmatched neither in our region nor in the wider global context. This is also confirmed by the recognition of the international jury, for which we are delighted. This achievement is another proof that Latvia may be a small country, but it is a big country when it comes to technological innovation and the ability to develop leading solutions, becoming a modern beacon for other countries,” said Juris Binde, President of LMT.
Everyone can help Latvia to win this award by casting their vote for one project in each category by 13 September. The public vote will account for 30% of the result, alongside the Jury's vote.
