Today, on September 15, the Port of Riga was visited by the First Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications of Belarus and Latvian-Belarusian Transport Working group leader Mr. Alexei Avramenko, as well as the Belarusian Railway Company First Deputy Chairman Mr.Igor Shilov. The guests met with the Freeport of Riga CEO Mr.Leonids Loginovs and sailed around the port water area.
Belarus has always been an important partner of Latvian transport and logistics industry, but right now the active search of new cooperation possibilities has become particularly important due to topical re-routing of Russian cargo to Russian ports. The guests were interested in Riga port opportunities in regard of Belarus cargo transit and were informed about the existing capacity of terminals, which are transshipping containers, oil products and fertilizers, as well as about the free territories of the port for development of new terminals and logistics centers.
Particular attention was paid to the options that the Riga Port has to offer in the context of Belarusian – Chinese logistics project “Great Stone”. The “Great Stone” is an industrial park and logistics center project of Chinese holding company China Merchants Group being developed on the territory of 90 km² near Minsk. Since Belarus does not have access to the sea and does not have its own ports, which are necessary to implement the objectives of Chinese entrepreneurs, there is now an urgent need to seek for the most efficient routes for cargo transshipment from Minsk to seaports and presently the options, provided by Lithuanian and Latvian ports, are being assessed.
The First Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications of Belarus has arrived at Latvia to participate in the Latvian-Belarusian Transport Working Group meeting. Tomorrow, on September 16, he will visit the Belarussian-Latvian business forum. The Freeport of Riga Authority representatives will also participate in the forum work and at its stand will inform the Belarussian companies of Riga port activities and options.
