In the framework of the Big Clean-up, the employees of the Freeport of Riga Authority, together with the residents of the Kundziņsala neighbourhood and representatives of the nearby port terminals, will plant a hedgerow on Saturday. The green hedgerow, that will further separate the residential area from the rapidly growing industrial part of the port in Kundziņsala will consist of a variety of conifers - juniper and Siberian fir - as well as broad-leaf trees and decorative shrubs - coastal maple, hawthorn, black elder, birch spirea and lime - and will stretch for about half a kilometre.
Kundziņsala is currently developing into an active manufacturing and logistics hub, with several major international investment projects underway, while port terminals are continuing to develop their operations on the island, boosting their cargo storage capacities and building new warehouses and cargo yards. Currently, 16 port companies are operating within Kundziņsala, including the largest container terminal BCT, handling on average 69% of sea containers (in TEUs) transhipped in Latvia.
Last year, the CINEA funds were invested in the infrastructure of Kundziņsala, strengthening the security and military mobility capacity of the port and Latvia. Moreover, a new traffic overpass is currently under construction with the aim to connect Kundziņsala with the Eastern Highway in Sarkandaugava, thus significantly facilitating the flow of trucks to the island terminals. Construction works of border crossing infrastructure, commissioned by the SJSC "Valsts nekustamie īpašumi", are also currently underway in Kundziņsala area. The purpose of the project - to create a state-of-the art infrastructure that meets modern requirements for the implementation of the functions of the national control services – the State Revenue Service, the State Border Guard and the Food and Veterinary Service.
The Freeport of Riga Authority is constantly cooperating with the residents of the neighbourhoods adjacent to the port and relevant residents' associations, implementing various initiatives and infrastructure improvement projects. Traditionally, during the Big Clean-up Day, the Authority representatives, together with the residents of the neighbourhoods in the vicinity of the port, are cleaning up the territories, providing additional landscaping works and deploying bulky waste containers in the neighbourhood areas. Last year, several containers of hazardous waste, tyres, construction debris, furniture and various household appliances amounting to almost 300 cubic metres were collected and disposed of. This year bulky waste containers will also be available for residents on the day of the clean-up - at the yacht club "Auda" in Mangaļsala (address: 15/17 Audupes street), including an additional container for old tyres, at Daugavgrīva Fortress in Bolderāja and at Kundziņsala (address: 6th cross line, Kundziņsala).
At the same time, on this Saturday, 26 April, the day of the Big Clean-up, an educational event for families with children "Nature Day in Kundziņsala", organised by the Freeport of Riga Authority, will take place at the Kundziņsala Sports and Recreation area from 11.00 to 14.00. During the event, bigger and smaller Big Clean-up participants will be able to enjoy various educational activities and games related to nature, its diversity as well as waste sorting. The event will take place in cooperation with the Mobile Nature Class of the Nature Conservation Agency and the Zero Waste Latvia association. Various surprises and awards are in store for the event participants and guests.
