The grand cleaning event of Latvia – the Big Clean-up – is being organized already for the fourth year in a row this year with the aim to make Latvia and the Baltic Sea Region the cleanest place on the global map by the 100th anniversary of Latvia, and to provide nature a possibility to recover by removing plastic bottles, rubber tires, cans of poisonous paint, and other garbage.
Supporting Latvia’s Big Clean-up, the Freeport of Riga Authority invites all inhabitants and enterprises to clean Latvia, including the littered places in the Freeport of Riga and adjacent territories, on Saturday, 30 April 2011, from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM.
Implementing the basic principles of social responsibility, the Freeport of Riga Authority already traditionally joins the processes that improve life quality to inhabitants of the city and maintain the environment clean. This year, the Freeport of Riga Authority is one of the organizers and supporters of the Big Clean-up. 14 sites have been identified in the territory of the Freeport of Riga Authority that need to be cleaned (see the list), and all port enterprises, as well as inhabitants living nearby the Freeport are invited to the clean-up. Viesturs Silenieks, Deputy of Board Chairman, representative of Ministry of Environment, emphasizes: “We are used to reproofs about one or another omission – whether justified or not, but the Freeport does everything possible to make living and recreating in the territories managed by the port more pleasant and safe for the inhabitants. We want to do also what is not defined by the law, but rather by the good will of our employees. This time, the inhabitants too have a chance to show their good will and come to the indicated places to clean the environment together with the employees of the Freeport.”
Letters have been sent to all enterprises of the Freeport, inviting to clean the territories managed by them and to join cleaning of the sites identified by the Freeport Authority.
