BKRR dambis

This week, repair work on section of the Daugavgrīva shoreline reinforcement was completed. Thus the next section of the more than 500-metre-long BKRR dam was restored, and the historic dam is once again accessible to pedestrians and cyclists.

The contractor, SIA “Asfaltbūve”, completed the dam repairs ahead of schedule. Despite the fact that it was the most complex of the dam sections renovated to date, the work was completed in half the planned three months. “We know that many residents visit the dam during the summer months, that is why we tried to complete the work as quickly as possible in order to restore visitor access to the dam and the Rietumu Mols as soon as possible,” said Mārtiņš Lavrinovičs, project manager at SIA “Asfaltbūve”.

As part of the repair work, the dam's reinforced concrete slabs were dismantled over a length of 80 meters, and a new shore reinforcement superstructure was created. Approximately 300 truckloads of Latvian boulders were used to reinforce the dam. The project also includes the improvement of the adjacent area, providing safe and convenient movement of pedestrians and cyclists on the renovated sections of the dam.

Every year, several meters of the shoreline are lost due to rising water levels, so it is essential for the Port of Riga to continue its shoreline reinforcement work. Before the repairs, the historic section of the dam was in a state of emergency. Due to the impact of last year's storms and rising sea levels, part of the dam's structural base had been washed away, and in many places the concrete slabs were damaged and broken.

The first reconstruction works on the BKKR dam structure, following damage caused by autumn storms and sea level changes, were carried out by the Freeport of Riga Authority in 2020, restoring almost 200 metres of the reinforcement line. In 2022, the next 100 metres of the dam structure were reinforced with boulders and granite piles. This summer the work has been continued by restoration of a further 80 metres of the historic dam structure.

The BKRR dam was built in 1997 as a shore reinforcement structure. Its purpose is to protect the land and port area from shoreline erosion and possible flooding. After the completion of the works the popular walking route to the nearby Rietumu Mols - a popular place for recreation, is again accessible and safe.
