The construction of a traffic overpass from Tvaika Street to Kundziņsala in Riga will continue during the winter period. By the end of this year, it is planned to complete 80% of the total work volume at the construction site. During the winter period, it is planned to carry out the assembly of specific structures and equipment installation. The construction of the overpass is planned to be fully completed in the 2026 construction season.

In December last year, the most important stage of the project - sliding the central steel span structure across the Sarkandaugava river - was started. The sliding of the span structure, physically connecting the two banks of the river, was completed in April this year. After that, in the summer and autumn months, the construction of various engineering communications - rain and domestic sewage, gas supply, lighting, low current, communications and power supply - was continued. A pavement was built on Tvaika Street and the closed port area on the Sarkandaugava side, and four of the eight overpasses were waterproofed and covered with asphalt concrete. The concreting of the overpass is planned to be completed by the end of this year.

During the winter period, it is planned to carry out the assembly of specific structures and installation of equipment at the construction site. In spring, construction work will resume in full swing with the installation of waterproofing on the overpass, construction of the surfacing, installation of equipment, and landscaping work. One of the final stages of this project will be testing the load-bearing capacity and commissioning of the overpass. After that, the new overpass will be opened for traffic.

Within the framework of the project, an approximately 863.5 meter long overpass is being developed, connecting Tvaika Street in Sarkandaugava with Kundziņsala - the industrial zone of the Freeport of Riga, providing new and efficient access to the port territory for freight transport. The new traffic overpass will significantly extend Riga’s inner ring road, providing a convenient connection between Tvaika Street, Kundziņsala and further redirection of cargo to the Eastern Motorway, Daudersala overpass, Dienvidu Bridge and Čakstes gatve. The project will contribute to the improvement of traffic flow and reduce the environmental burden in the city center.

The 360 ha port area in Kundziņsala is currently undergoing a dynamic transformation, becoming the new industrial center of Riga with smart production facilities, digitized port control infrastructure, modern energy and container logistics companies. Kundziņsala is also an important point of national security and military mobility.

The construction works are carried out by the general partnership “RK link”, representing SIA “Binders”, SIA “TILTS” and SIA “Hanza Construction Group”.

It has already been reported that the municipality is implementing the project in cooperation with the Freeport of Riga Authority. The local government shall implement the construction of the traffic overpass and will ensure its functioning by constructing the Kundziņsala traffic overpass, but the Freeport as a co-operation partner will develop relevant part of Kundziņsala territory and ensure the connection with the overpass up to the trestles to and from the overpass.
The total cost of the project is 82.6 million euros. The state budget grant amounts to 23 million euros, and the state budget loan amounts to 59.6 million euros. The project is co-financed by European Union funds - 4.5 million euros from CF funding (the beneficiary – the Freeport of Riga Authority).
