Agreement on development of a logistics centre in the territory of the Freeport of Riga between Brazilian consortium Granada Enterprise and the Freeport of Riga Authority will be officially signed on May 10.
Exactly a year ago, Ports Minister of Brazil and delegation of entrepreneurs arrived to Latvia for a working visit to get acquainted with the possibilities of the Riga Port to transship the main export product of Brazil – sugar – here, as well as offer of other terminals so that the Riga Port could be used for logistics of other food cargos, including frozen products, in perspective. Current agreement is the result of the previous visit, attained during this year. A year is considered a very short term for a process so voluminous.
Consortium Granada Enterprise is one of the biggest importers and exporters of food commodities in Brazil, and, developing its operation towards Europe and Asia, it has selected the Freeport of Riga as the location for its main logistics centre. A. Valentim dos Reis, CEO of Granada Enterprise, noted that location of the Riga Port, as well as the established infrastructure and work organization is perfect for establishment of a logistics centre that will serve as the base for trade from South America’s countries, including Brazil, to Europe, Russia, and China.
China is one of the biggest cooperation partners of the consortium, and movement of food commodities between these countries can be measured in million tons, which would provide a notable growth in operation of the Freeport of Riga. Attraction of food cargos to the Riga Port is also a substantial part of the strategy elaborated by the Freeport of Riga Authority; it will allow to distribute risks among cargos of various types. Currently proportion of food cargos in the Riga Port is comparatively small.
The agreement envisages voluminous investments from Brazilian entrepreneurs in the territory of the Freeport of Riga.
Delegation of Granada Enterprise arrived to Riga in connection with the exhibition and forum “Invest Expo 2011” held in Ķīpsala exhibition centre, within the frameworks of which also trade and investment mission “China Business Days 2011” takes place.
