Allowing port dues’ rebates to "Latlines" Ltd. ferry traffic in line Riga – Kiel

Today the Board of the Freeport of Riga supported request of "Latlines" Ltd. referring assignment of port dues’ rebates to ferry line Riga – Kiel. Further on the ferry traffic Riga – Kiel will have 95% port dues’ rebate applied in the Freeport of Riga. Simultaneously in order to foster passenger traffic growth in the Freeport 95% port dues’s rebates will be applied also to "Birka Cruises" cruise ship "Birka Princess".

The Freeport of Riga cargo turnover has risen by 18,6%

During eleven months of the current year 16 198 900 tons of cargo were handled in the Freeport of Riga, which is by 18,6% more that during the same period of the last year, when the Freeport handled 13 662 800 tons. Currently the Freeport has handled 5 858 800 tons of dry bulk cargoes, which is by 28% more than last year. Including 1 532 700 tons of bulk chemicals that is by 14% more than last year.

Significantly increased the handled amount of coal in the Freeport of Riga

During the last six month significantly increased the incoming and outgoing amounts of coal in the Freeport of Riga. Due to the increasing amounts the Board of the Freeport has decided to permit channel dredging in the Pilmuiza aquatory, thus allowing loading coal into vessels with larger deadweight. During last few months the handled amount of coal was sharply raising also in other Baltic Sea ports. It is due to the fact that Europe has started to gradually abdicate from nuclear energy. Currently the largest coal importers are Great Britain, Germany and Holland.

Leasing a plot in the Freeport of Riga for the construction of a new oil terminal

The Board of the Freeport decided to lease a plot to company "Naftas serviss" for building of a new oil terminal. The agreement with the "Naftas serviss" determines to lease approximately 290 000 sq.m of land for 30 years period. Currently in the territory being leased for the construction no commercial activities are being carried out and the largest part of the plot covers swamp. The land lease agreement determines that until 31st December 2002 "Naftas serviss" will work out terminal sketch project, which will be subjected to approval of the Freeport Board. From the Freeport of Riga point of view the terminal capacity will not be the determinant factor for the project advantage, because building of a new terminal in a territory, which currently is not being used and thus is not making any profits, will be utilised and improved.

Leasing a plot for construction of a new business centre in Kipsala

The Board of the Freeport decided to sign an agreement with SIA "Darzu pasaule" regarding leasing of a plot belonging to the Freeport in Kipsala for construction of a business centre. The plot is 17 000 sq.m wide, currently not being used and messed with building refuses. In compliance with the plans of SIA "Darzu pasaule" for the building of a new business centre and improvement of the territory it is planned to make investments of about 3 millions LVL.

The police will use two cutters of the Freeport of Riga

The Board of the Freeport has decided to sign an agreement with the Riga City Main Police Board regarding the delivery of the Freeport patrol cutters to the water police. In compliance with the agreement the police obtains two cutters and other specialized equipment in order to provide order in the territory of the Freeport. To provide order on water a special 32nd police department was formed, although a real order providing on water is incommodious due to the lack of equipment. As the Freeport of Riga is interested in providing the order in its territory, the Board supported the decision of purchasing the necessary equipment for the needs of police. The total cost of cutters and equipment is about 80 000 LVL.

"Latvijas Unibanka" and "Unilizings" will finance the new granule factory in the Freeport of Riga

During March of the current year "Latvijas Unibanka" has signed an agreement with "Gaujas granulas" Ltd. on financing the new wooden chip granule factory construction in the Freeport of Riga. The scheme of financing shows that in order to purchase the equipment an agreement with "Unilizings" will be signed. In accordance with the agreement that determines refunding period of 6 years and a possibility to extend it, EUR 3 million will be invested in the construction of the new factory.

Riga is the fastest growing port in Latvia

The fastest growing port in Latvia is the Freeport of Riga, where 5,747 mln tons of cargo were handled, that is by 21% more than during first four months of 2001, when 4,747 mln were handled.

The Riga City Council and Freeport of Riga authority will own the majority interest of the new ferry company

The Riga City Council and the Freeport of Riga Authority will own the majority interest of the forming agent company "Rigas juras linijas" (RJL), which is planning to operate the ferry line Riga - Stockholm.

The CEO of the Freeport of Riga does not approve the amendments of the Laws regarding the tax application in the Freeports supported by the Government. The amendments make obstacles for successful business in the Freeport; why should Latvia join the European Union when the country must accept disadvantageous conditions. The CEO of the Freeport of Riga admitted, thus the "rules of the game" are being changed during the "game" and the Freeport becomes unpredictable for entrepreneurs.

Planning to restructure port dues in the Freeport of Riga

During the Board meeting on Friday, 12th of April the first project regarding the new order of port dues’ determination was examined.

The cargo turnover in the Freeport of Riga has increased by 14,5%

During January of the current year 1 262 100 tons of cargo were handled in the Freeport of Riga, which is by 14,5% more than during January 2001.

The Freeport of Riga will take credit of USD 500 000 to invest it in the ferry company

The Board of the Freeport during the meeting on Friday decided to announce international tender regarding USD 500 000, which will be invested in the ferry company "Rigas juras linijas" Ltd.

Regulations on the Freeport of Riga territory enlargement come into force

Today the Regulations on the Freeport of Riga territory enlargement adopted by the Cabinet of Ministers come into force. The Regulations determine Freeport territory of 7337,7 hectares, of which 2520 hectares are land and 4818 hectares are water.
